What Is the World Handicap System?

The World Handicap System is golf's universal way of measuring playing ability. Launched globally in 2020, it unified six separate systems into one standardized model. Whether you're a beginner tracking improvement or a tournament player needing an official index, the WHS lets golfers of every skill level compete fairly on any course in the world.

What Your
Handicap Index Means

Your Handicap Index represents your demonstrated scoring potential, not your average score. The formula uses the best 8 score differentials from your most recent 20 rounds to give you an accurate snapshot of your ability. It updates daily, so your index always reflects where your game is right now.

Why a Handicap
Makes Every Round Better

A handicap levels the playing field. A golfer with a 5 Handicap Index and a golfer with a 20 Handicap Index can compete fairly because the higher-handicap player receives additional strokes. Beyond competition, a handicap helps you track improvement, create fair matches with friends, compare your game across different courses, and participate in leagues, member events, and charity tournaments.

Why an Official GHIN Handicap Is the Standard

Some golf apps offer unofficial handicap tracking, but tournaments and sanctioned events require an official GHIN handicap. The GHIN platform, operated through the USGA and local Allied Golf Associations, is the recognized standard for competitive golf in the United States. Daily updates, fewer rounds to get started, and a handicap that travels with you anywhere in the world make the modern system more accessible than any that came before it. If you plan to enter any TGA event, you'll need one.
